Former Education Funding Panel Chair To Run For Congress

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The former chairman of an education funding commission in Maryland is running for Congress.

Alvin Thornton announced Thursday that he will run for the Democratic nomination for the state's 4th Congressional District seat. The district includes Prince George's and Anne Arundel counties.

He says he will formally make the announcement July 28 in Glenarden.

Thornton will be joining a crowded Democratic primary field.

The seat will be open because Rep. Donna Edwards is running for the U.S. Senate seat that will be vacant when Sen. Barbara Mikulski retires.

Thornton chaired the Thornton Commission, which led to increased education funding of more than $1 billion over a five-year phase-in period. It serves as the current framework for state education funding in Maryland.
