Former DC Mayor Asks For Apology From Prosecutor

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former District of Columbia mayor Vincent Gray says the former top federal prosecutor for the nation's capital owes him an apology for a long-running investigation that ended without charges being filed against Gray.

Gray criticized former U.S. Attorney Ronald Machen in radio and television interviews Tuesday. The current U.S. Attorney, Channing Phillips, announced last week that the investigation was ending.

Gray said Tuesday that he was leading in the polls during his re-election bid before prosecutors made statements that led people to believe he would soon be indicted.

Machen said in a statement that the case was about more than Gray and the timing would have been criticized regardless. Six people pleaded guilty to felonies for their part in an illegal slush fund that aided Gray's 2010 campaign.
