Flood Threatens More Clear Spring, Md. Residents
CLEAR SPRING, Md. (AP) -- Washington County officials are urging people who live along Conococheague Creek to consider moving to higher ground.
The Herald-Mail reports that the county issued the advisory Friday as the National Weather Service forecast major flooding after Thursday's torrential rain.
The creek was at 14.9 feet at Fairview at 9 a.m. Friday. Major flooding occurs at 15 feet.
County highway officials say a 5-mile section of U.S. 40 from Clear Spring to Big Pool remains closed after flash flooding Thursday.
County building inspectors are assessing the safety of about 20 homes in Clear Spring after dozens of residents were evacuated Thursday. Officials say there have been no reports of serious injuries.
The Cumberland Times-news reports numerous rescues and building collapses Thursday in Cresaptown and Bowling Green south of Cumberland.
