Fire Shuts Down Power At Md. Hospital
CHEVERLY, Md. (AP) -- Prince George's Hospital Center is using emergency generators and only accepting emergency walk-in patients after a fire in the hospital's power plant.
County fire officials say three transformers at the hospital's campus caught fire Thursday night, but the blaze was contained to the boiler room and put out within an hour. The hospital, which is home to one of the region's trauma centers, was not evacuated and no injuries were reported.
Pepco cut power to the area, but the hospital is using generators. Hospital officials say they are diverting medevacs and ambulances, but still accepting emergency walk-in patients. Routine and elective surgeries scheduled for Friday have been canceled.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
