Fire At Johns Hopkins Birthplace Causes Minimal Damage
GAMBRILLS, Md. (AP) — Officials are investigating what sparked a fire at the Gambrills birthplace of Johns Hopkins over the weekend.
Anne Arundel County Fire Department spokesman Lt. Erik Kornmeyer says area firefighters responded to vacant home Sunday for a small fire on the back porch.
Kornmeyer says the damage from the blaze was minimal. No injuries were reported.
In April, the Polm Cos. announced it would partner with Preservation Maryland to find a buyer who would repair and maintain the estate.
The home, known as Whites Hall, is located on 13 acres of land and has been vacant for years.
Records show the house was built between 1784 and 1795. Hopkins, who is known for helping to start the hospital and university named after him in Baltimore, was born there in 1795.
