Fire Academy Receives Beam From World Trade Center
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baltimore's fire training academy has received a section of I-beam salvaged from the remains of the World Trade Center after the attacks on Sept. 11.
The beam, which was unveiled on Sunday, will become part of a permanent memorial as part of a $9.5 million renovation of the training center campus. For now it will be placed in the Baltimore training center auditorium. Deputy Chief Lloyd R. Carter tells The Baltimore Sun that the beam will be in place in time for graduation in August, in an area already dedicated to honoring firefighters who died in the attacks.
Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake called the beam at the fire academy a "fitting tribute."
