Film About Civil War In Hagerstown Premieres
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- A short documentary film about the Civil War Battle of Hagerstown is making its premiere.
The Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau is sponsoring the event Wednesday evening in the downtown Arts and Entertainment District.
The agency also helped finance the production by Hagerstown city planner and military historian Stephen Bockmiller.
Historian Eric Wittenberg appears in the 32-minute film. He says the clash on July 6, 1863, was a critical moment in the Confederate retreat from Gettysburg. Wittenberg says the Confederate victory in Hagerstown enabled Southern forces to reach and cross the Potomac River at Williamsport.
Copies of the film will be sold at the tourism bureau.
