FedEx Debates A Sparrows Point Distribution Center
SPARROWS POINT, Md. (WJZ) -- Baltimore County is hoping FedEx delivers on a facility at Sparrows Point. The shipping giant is considering a spot in what is now pitched as one of the best industry locations on the East Coast.
Political reporter Pat Warren has more on the plans.
The company isn't commenting but a distribution center at Sparrows Point would certainly be a bright spot for the county.
FedEx isn't talking but the word is out that it's looking at property at Sparrows Point, the Baltimore County peninsula that was once home to Bethlehem Steel.
"The deal has not been signed yet. I can tell you, though, it's been in the works for a while. We're very excited," said Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz.
Two years ago, there was nothing but disappointment when RG Steel folded and 2,000 people lost their jobs.
"It's not just going to affect that mill. It's going to affect all of us," said one.
"There's not going to be any money going into the supermarkets, the gas stations," said another.
Last month, the group that bought the Sparrows Point property also brought the good news of redevelopment and FedEx may be first at bat.
"We've always viewed the value of that land as a unique asset unlike any other 3,000 acre parcel on the East Coast because it's already industrially zoned, it has deep water port access and access to two interstate highways and two rail lines," Kamenetz said.
And a pool of workers looking for jobs.
"And they're good, well-paying jobs and boy, we need them there," he said.
It's not just FedEx that's exploring; other companies may be considering a move there.
Demolition on the Bethlehem Steel property continues. The blast furnace is coming down this winter.
