Federal Trial Delayed For Former CO Charged In Md. Inmate's Beating
BALTIMORE (AP) -- An approaching snowstorm is delaying a federal trial for a former Maryland correctional officer stemming from the 2008 beating of an inmate at Roxbury Correctional Institution.
Jury selection for Josh Hummer's trial is now set to begin Wednesday in Baltimore. The former sergeant denies allegations he failed to stop the assault on Kenneth Davis, ignored his serious injuries and obstructed the investigation.
Twelve other defendants have pleaded guilty to conspiracy and other offenses. Two more await trial.
Davis suffered a broken nose and fractures in his back and ribs from a beating after he scuffled with a guard.
Nine Roxbury officers were charged in state court. But the only two convicted were those who defied what one called "the brotherhood of silence" by turning state's evidence.
