Federal Budget Cuts May Harm The Most Vulnerable
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Nonprofit groups in the Washington area say automatic budget cuts from Congress will likely slash services for low-income families, seniors and people with disabilities.
The Washington Post reports charities are facing cuts in staff and services.
The Latin American Youth Center in Washington, which houses homeless teens and offers domestic violence counseling and job training, is facing a loss of $300,000 to $400,000 in federal grants. The center serves 4,400 youth in D.C. and Maryland. But as many as a dozen homeless teens seeking shelter may have to be turned away if budget cuts persist.
Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland is facing a loss of $250,000 in funding that feeds 1,200 seniors. The organization may have to cut its meal service from five to four days a week.
