Farm Groups, Perdue Support Md. Farm In Court Suit
WILLARDS, Md. (AP) -- Farm groups and Perdue say they are raising money for Eastern Shore farmers in a battle with an environmental group.
The Wicomico County Young Farmers and Ranchers, the Maryland Farm Bureau and Perdue Farms announced Thursday that they are launching SaveFarmFamilies.org. The group will raise money for the legal defense of Alan and Kristin Hudson, the operators of Hudson Farm, a Berlin contract grower.
Perdue and Hudson Farm were sued by the Waterkeepers Alliance and others over claims that runoff from the farm is polluting a nearby waterway. The group says the suit could bankrupt the Maryland farmers as they fight the claims and establish a harmful precedent for other family farms that could be dragged into court for following every-day farming practices.
