Fans Enjoy NCAA Lacrosse Championships In Baltimore
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Nowhere in the country is lacrosse bigger than in Baltimore. So it's fitting the NCAA Tournament is being held here. But, as Mary Bubala reports, lacrosse fans are coming from across the nation.
You probably can't find a lacrosse fan more excited than 9-year-old Matt Winegardner of Florida. He will join thousands of others at M&T Bank Stadium to watch the men's NCAA lacrosse championship.
"Well, I have been watching them on television all season, so it's just like a miracle that I am here," said Winegardner.
Winegardner will be in the stadium to see the Final Four battle it out for the championship title starting Saturday, but before the games begin there's action outside the stadium for those who live, eat and breathe lacrosse.
"There is a lot of interactive games, so you can come over here and do some accuracy shots, speed shots, a green screen where you can take photos. There will be MLL and NLL players signing autographs, so there's a lot to do," said Winegardner.
Last year, more than 37,000 fans watched the championship game. This year, the NCAA is expecting more fans with Maryland in the Final Four. The unseeded Terps take on number 5 Duke, the defending champion.
Winegardner is rooting for Denver, but...
"Well, I wanted Syracuse, then Maryland got Syracuse out, so now I want Maryland out immediately," said Winegardner.
There's a pep rally at the Inner Harbor featuring Mike Powell. The Fan Zone opens Saturday at 11 a.m. Gates open at 2:30.
