Defense: Lacrosse Player Didn't Kill Girlfriend Intentionally
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WJZ) -- Prosecutors made their case against the man accused of murdering a local lacrosse star.
Mike Hellgren reports the suspect didn't even show up in the courtroom Monday.
George Huguely V lived a life of privilege that came crashing down around him. He's been in jail for almost a year and could stay there for the rest of his life for murdering his girlfriend Yeardley Love almost one year ago.
Both Huguely and Love played lacrosse at the University of Virginia. She's from Cockeysville and went to high school at Notre Dame Prep.
Prosecutors say he was angry she broke off their two-year-long relationship, went to her off-campus apartment and beat her, leaving her to die.
Those who love her are struggling to understand why.
"There was not a mean cell in her body. She was goodness epitomized," said Mary Bartel, Notre Dame Prep lacrosse coach.
Huguely's defense has tried to raise doubt over whether blunt force trauma killed Yeardley. One of their forensic scientists claims toxicology reports show Adderall in her system when she died and the drug could have caused her heart to stop beating.
"He is able to confront his accusers and they can see on the video screen that the defendant is there, listening to what is taking place," said defense attorney Scott Goodman.
Love's family released new pictures of her, along with a new message Monday morning. "We miss Yeardley so very much and will work tirelessly to honor her legacy. It is truly devastating to wake up each day and realize she is no longer here. Her bright, bright future was stolen from us all. We have faith in the justice system and trust that the truth will prevail."
The next step in the case is a hearing before a grand jury. That could happen later in April.
