Family Of Firefighter Killed In Murder-Suicide Releases Statement
"Our hearts are absolutely broken over the loss of our son, brother, grandson and uncle. Our beloved Andy dedicated his life to protecting and saving others with the Baltimore City Fire Department as a Firefighter/Paramedic. We have come to learn that he died doing the same thing, putting others first. The only survivor of this horrific tragedy told us Andy tried to protect her and Marie, and because of that, he became the first victim. We have lost someone who meant so much to us and so many family members and friends. It's hard to imagine going forward without him, but we know Andy died a hero. That is the way he lived his life and we couldn't be prouder of him.
"Andy's final act of heroism was just one of many in his young life. He was awarded the 2010 "Chief Thomas J. Burke Courage Medal" for courageous acts in the line of duty for rescuing a man from a fire at 205 S. Gilmor Street. Andy heard faint cries for help and despite high heat and smoke conditions, Andy was able to get to the then unconscious man and call for others to get him to safety.
"Andy also recently received recognition for spotting a three-year-old boy walking alone on the streets of Linthicum back on July 23. Andy spotted the boy on West Maple Road, he stopped, comforted the child and then called police to help get the boy home. It was no surprise to us that Andy stopped to help that little boy. Andy loved children and was a beloved uncle to his young niece and nephew.
Investigators have told us Andy was not a target in this case. We know Andy was glowing about his recent relationship with Marie. We have been in touch with her family and our hearts are with them as well. We take some comfort knowing Andy was filled with happiness until his life was cut so tragically short.
"Our grief is overwhelming right now, but we know Andy would even try to take that away if he could. We ask that you please respect our privacy during this very difficult time. We will always love and miss our hero, Andrew Hoffman."
