Ex-Health Dept. Worker From Md. Gets 1 Year In Prison
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A former epidemiologist for the Oklahoma Department of Health has been sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to illegally shipping firearms to the Republic of Ghana and defrauding the Social Security Administration.
The U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Oklahoma said Friday that a judge sentenced 62-year-old Samuel Alphonso Nimo of Owing Mills, Md., on Thursday. Nimo was also ordered to pay $27,816 in Social Security restitution.
Prosecutors say Nimo illegally shipped at least eight firearms to the Republic of Ghana for resale. Nimo also allegedly received Social Security benefits for the care of his child who had moved to Germany and was not eligible.
Nimo worked at the state Department of Health at the time.
