Ex-Cop Gets Life Sentence In Deaths Of Woman, Baby
UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) -- A former District of Columbia police officer has been sentenced to life without parole in the deaths of his mistress and their baby daughter.
Richmond Phillips was sentenced Friday in Prince George's County Circuit Court to two terms of life without parole, plus 20 years.
He was convicted in January on two counts of first-degree murder and other crimes.
Phillips was arrested in June 2011 after police found Wynetta Wright fatally shot in a park in Prince George's County. Their 11-month-old child was left to die in an overheated parked car nearby.
Prosecutors argued that Phillips killed Wright to avoid paying child support and had wanted to talk her out of going forward with a paternity hearing. DNA proved that he was the child's father.
