Etherly Leads Loyola (Md.) Past Manhattan 63-61
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Erik Etherly scored 30 points to lead Loyola (Md.) to a 63-61 victory over Manhattan on Sunday that clinched the No. 3 seed in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament.
The teams will meet again Saturday night in the tournament quarterfinals in Springfield, Mass. Manhattan earned the sixth seed as a result of Fairfield's loss to Marist on Sunday. Loyola also defeated Manhattan in their first meeting this season, 51-41 on Jan. 25.
Etherly scored 19 points in the first half, which ended with the Greyhounds (21-10, 12-6) leading 39-35. It was a far cry from Manhattan's previous game Friday night, when fewer points were scored in the entire contest as the Jaspers beat Fairfield 34-31.
Loyola led 52-39 with 13:19 remaining in the second half before Manhattan whittled the margin to 58-55 with 3:55 left.
Manhattan shot 50 percent (12 of 24) in the second half to Loyola's 37.5 percent (6 of 16), but the Greyhounds were awarded 17 second-half free throws and made 11, while the Jaspers were just 0 of 2.
Dylon Cormier added 14 points and Robert Olson 10 for Loyola.
Rhamel Brown led Manhattan with 14 points.
