Elections Board Certifies Redistricting Petition
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The Maryland State Board of Elections has certified that the state's congressional redistricting map will be on the ballot in November for voters to approve or reject.
Linda Lamone, the board administrator, wrote a letter to Washington County Republican Delegate Neil Parrott on Friday to inform him that 59,201 signatures have been accepted by the board. That's more than the 55,736 needed to put the map on the ballot for a referendum.
Opponents say the map has been gerrymandered to favor Democrats at the expense of proper representation. Democrats say it reflects demographic changes.
Voters also will be deciding whether to approve a law allowing same-sex marriage in November. A law allowing illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition at state colleges under certain circumstances also will be on the ballot.
