Eastern Shore Copes With Flooding After Irene
MILLINGTON, Md. (WJZ) -- Irene hit hard on Maryland's Eastern Shore.
Mike Hellgren reports the flooding damage is extensive in Queen Anne's County.
It is simply heartbreaking. Some people have lost just about everything. The people are resilient and they are putting their lives back together.
Homes were under water and people had to be rescued in boats after heavy flooding in Millington.
"I guess five and a half foot [of water]," said Dana Clough. "The dam broke outside of town and that's when all the water came in."
"We had 27 and a quarter here," said Lonny Manley. "Got to clean up and start over again."
As the Chester River overflowed its banks, it was a race for Phyllis Pearson to get out.
"It can all be washed," Pearson said.
Irene left her mark but she didn't break the spirits of Millington residents.
"It is what it is," Manley said. "Nothing you can do about it."
FEMA will be here at the end of the week to help residents and to assess the damage.
That area had between 10 and 11 inches of rain.
