Driver Killed In Tanker Explosion
PORT DEPOSIT, Md. (WJZ) -- A deadly accident in Port Deposit.
For the second time in two weeks, police are investigating a serious accident in Cecil County involving a tanker truck loaded with fuel.
This time the cargo ignited.
A twisted and melted pile of metal is all that remains from a fuel tanker that crashed on Route 222 just before 9:30 p.m. Friday. State police say the driver lost control as the truck came barreling down the ramp at a high speed. The tanker was carrying fuel that exploded on impact, killing the driver.
The fireball caused by the accident lit up the sky and destroyed nearby power lines.
"We have confirmed that there is one fatality at this point," said James Russell, Maryland State Police.
This is the second time this month that a tanker carrying fuel has crashed in Port Deposit. Two weeks ago, a truck overturned and smashed into a condominium building. The driver suffered minor injuries and residents were evacuated.
The exact cause of Friday night's accident is still a mystery, but police believe speed was a factor. Crews are still trying to restore power to homes and businesses in that area.
