Driver Convicted In Deaths Of 2 Highway Workers Collecting Trash
LA PLATA, Md. (AP) -- A Fort Washington man has been convicted of two counts of vehicular manslaughter for killing two workers who were collecting trash on a median in Waldorf.
A Charles County jury convicted Yuri M. F. Vielot Jr. of Fort Washington on Wednesday. He faces up to 20 years in prison at sentencing Nov. 7.
Vielot, 27, was convicted in the deaths of Marlon Lorenzo and Erick Alvarado, who were contract workers for the State Highway Administration. Prosecutors say were walking in the median of state Route 228 in October 2010.
Authorities say an SUV driven by Vielot veered onto the median, hit a sign and ran into the men, throwing them into the road.
Prosecutors say Vielot told police after the accident that he had fallen asleep at the wheel.
