Dr. Keiffer Mitchell Sr. Dies At 73

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Dr. Keiffer J. Mitchell Sr., a member of a prominent Baltimore political family, has died. He was 73.

His son, Keiffer J. Mitchell, Jr., said his father died Tuesday surrounded by family at Medstar Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore after a brief illness.

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake issued the following statement:

"All of Baltimore mourns the loss of a member of our legendary civil rights family, the Mitchells. Dr. Keiffer Mitchell Sr., the son of the 101st Senator and the father of former City Councilman and former Delegate Keiffer Mitchell Jr., was a kind man and loving father. My prayers are with the entire Mitchell family."

Mitchell, a gastrointestinal surgeon, practiced medicine in Baltimore. His son, who served in the Maryland House of Delegates, says his father worked to open doors for African-American doctors while serving as the first African-American on the Johns Hopkins Medical School admissions committee.

The doctor was the son of Clarence M. Mitchell Jr., a leading figure in the civil rights movement and a lobbyist for the NAACP. He also is related to the late Parren J. Mitchell, the first African-American member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Maryland.
