Dr. Ben Carson Making Waves Again: Obamacare 'Worst Thing Since Slavery'
WASHINGTON (WJZ) -- World-renowned doctor Ben Carson causes controversy with racially charged comments.
Kai Jackson explains the former Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon is taking aim at the president and Obamacare.
Politics and medicine collide as Carson criticizes the Affordable Care Act, which went into effect Oct. 1.
"Obamacare is really, I think, the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery. And it is, in a way, it is slavery," Carson said.
Carson spoke at the Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C. on Friday. He offers this explanation of why he thinks Obamacare is the worst thing in the U.S. since slavery.
"It is making all of us subservient to the government," he said. "And it was never about health care, it was about control."
Carson retired from Johns Hopkins Hospital in July after a distinguished 36-year career.
It's not the first time the former pediatric neurosurgeon has criticized the president's policies. Carson made controversial comments in February with the president just feet away.
"Our deficit is a big problem. When a person is born, give him a birth certificate, an electronic medical record and a health savings account," said Carson.
"We don't have to share the same political views," said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. "But I certainly admire him."
Mayor Rawlings-Blake believes it's time to focus on making sure people have health care.
"Let's move on. Let's get people enrolled and let's try to help instead of pointing out all the pitfalls," she said.
The mayor believes there will be adjustments to Obamacare as needed in the future.
