Downtown Pikesville Is Getting A New Look
PIKESVILLE, Md. (WJZ) -- Change is coming to downtown Pikesville as revitalization projects are combining the old and the new.
Andrea Fujii explains the first step is redeveloping a 90-year-old fire station.
In 1920 Pikesville built its first firehouse on Reisterstown Road. Ninety-one years and $500,000 later, two businesses have moved in.
"We came across this building and we kind of fell in love with the history and the architecture," said Sam Luxenburg, Katz and Luxenburg.
And that isn't the only change. Since 2002, Baltimore County has helped in new projects totaling $80 million.
"In a down economy we have a lot of significant reinvestment in Pikesville and it's a good thing," said Kevin Kamenetz, Baltimore County Executive.
That includes construction on a $2.4 million building. The project will be a 10,000 square-foot building with two floors of retail and businesses.
A new Staples and Walgreens are planned down the street with architecture that promises to match the area's rich history.
"To maintain a sense of that Main Street charm I think is helpful," said Kamenetz.
With more businesses, owners hope prosperity follows.
"We're just happy to be part of the 'revitalization' of this area," said Luxenburg.
The old fire station had been vacant for 12 years before it was purchased and renovated.
