Sugar Company Celebrates 90th Birthday With A Contest

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Domino Sugars' bright red neon sign shimmers over the Inner Harbor.

Jessica Kartalija reports in celebration of their 90th birthday, there's a contest to see who can capture the iconic sign best.

For years, Domino Sugar has been a household name and in Charm City, the sign says it all.

"It reminds me of Baltimore, more of the past, I guess, because there used to be a lot of industry down here," said Eric Molesworth.

"Cool historic sense to the harbor. I like looking at it," said one.

As do millions of others. Now, as the city celebrates its 90th birthday, they want to see what you see when you look at the sign.

"We are going to have a photography contest with a first and second place winner for the best photograph of the Domino Sugar sign," said refinery manager Stuart Fitzgibbon.

The winner of the contest receives $990 and the runner-up wins $590. The top 10 entries win Domino's prize packs.

The contest will be judged by Domino Sugar and the photography staff at WJZ's media partner, the Baltimore Sun.

"It reminds people of what's important in life, which is the family environment, home, good cooking, something sweet after dinner. It's a warm Baltimore message," Fitzgibbon said.

In addition to this plant here in Baltimore and others along the East Coast, Domino Sugar has plants in Mexico, Belize and England.

Winners will be announced Dec. 12.
