Dog Who Refused To Leave Owner's Side Found Temporary Home

BALTIMORE (WJZ)--From standing by her injured owner to nearly being homeless and euthanized, a pit bull named Precious has a foster home.

WJZ's Tracey Leong explains this heroic dog's story.

Pit bull advocate Jessica Stuby embraces Precious the pit bull.

It was in early December that this heartwarming image of the dog refusing to leave her owner's side captured Jessica's attention.

"Such a common trait in this breed to love whoever is taking care of them," said Jessica Stuby.

The pit bull's owner, April Newell, suffered minor injuries after the home in Landover went up in flames and her father was hospitalized for smoke inhalation and burns.

Newell says her dog has always been like that.

Only WJZ spoke to Precious' owner after the house fire, but Precious couldn't go back to her owner since there's a pit bull ban in Prince George's County.

Instead Precious went to relatives in Montgomery County, but they couldn't care for her. That's where Jessica Stuby stepped in, who runs the pit bull advocacy group "Babes 4 Bullies".

Over the years Jessica has helped rescue more than 200 pit bulls, just like Precious trying to change the stigma surrounding the breed.

Jessica spends her time fighting for change working to lift the pit bull bans across the country all while raising her own pit bulls.

She hopes people see Precious' story and join her cause.

"Her story is no different than all the other dogs across the United States that need homes," said Stuby.

Jessica Stuby says she will foster Precious until she finds a forever home.

People interested in adopting or caring for Precious can contact the Bayside Animal Medical Center at 410-544-4423 or Jessica Stuby Jess@babes4bullies.com.

It has been illegal to own a pit bull in Prince George's County for nearly two decades. Violators face a 1,000 fine and jail time.
