Discrimination Suit Filed Against Md. Transit Officials
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Four Baltimore-area residents have filed a discrimination lawsuit against transportation officials, saying they're illegally limiting services for people with disabilities.
The attorneys who filed the federal lawsuit say it's a class-action complaint that could apply to 32,000 people with disabilities who need transportation services in the Baltimore area.
The lawsuit isn't seeking monetary damages but is asking that the Maryland Transit Administration be ordered to "take immediate steps to broaden access to its service and ensure reliability."
The lawsuit names outgoing Maryland Secretary of Transportation James Smith and two top officials with the Maryland Transit Administration. Spokespeople for both agencies did not immediately return messages left early Thursday morning.
The lawsuit was filed Jan. 16 by the Maryland Disability Law Center. It was first reported Wednesday by The Baltimore Sun.
