Did The NCAA Punish Jim Boeheim Hard Enough?
The NCAA laid down a big punishment to the Syracuse Orange basketball program on Friday afternoon following a multi-year investigation into the university's athletic programs. The team loses 12 scholarships over 4 years, and they lose their head coach Jim Boeheim for the first 9 games of conference play in the 2015-2016 season. Boeheim also vacated 108 wins from 2004-2007 and 2010-2012 when the team had ineligible players on the court. Scott and Terry were both critical of the punishment following such an extensive investigation. Terry questions whether this punishment will make teams think twice before cheating. "Does any of this really make you stop cheating for the fact that wow we got caught, we have to be more careful with our cheating. None of these things hurt the Syracuse program or give you that ooh we better not do that again."
In losing 12 scholarships over the course of 4 years, it thins out the recruiting classes for Syracuse in the near future. Scott discussed the potential impact of losing scholarships. "I guess losing three scholarships does hurt, but its an 8 or 9 man game generally in college basketball so they still have 9 right? It gives you less wiggle room when you miss, or if a guy gets hurt or if he academically crashes or something. You don't have quite as much wiggle room but I don't think that's a game changer."
