Detroit Man Sentenced In Md. Bank Robberies
BALTIMORE (AP) -- A Detroit man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for robbing banks in western Maryland and West Virginia.
Dwayne Smiley Sr., 49, was sentenced Friday in federal court in Baltimore. He had pleaded guilty to bank robbery.
According to his plea agreement, Smiley and 61-year-old Donald Larue Hays, also of Detroit, drove from Michigan to Maryland and West Virginia in December 2010 and January 2011. Prosecutors say they robbed three banks during those trips and that Smiley drove the getaway car each time.
Prosecutors say the two robbed a BB&T bank in Martinsburg, W.Va.; an M&T Bank in Clear Spring, and an M&T Bank in Hagerstown.
Hays also pleaded guilty in the crimes and will be sentenced Nov. 12.
