Police said Tuesday that the ambulance was on its way to an emergency call in Baltimore County, and that three EMTs were inside.
Police say the ambulance crashed into the back of a car and a tractor-trailer stopped across several lanes because of a minor collision.
Ambulance driver Jay Stanton was the most seriously injured, and it took rescuers an hour to extract him from the ambulance before he was taken to Shock Trauma in Baltimore in critical condition. He was stable Tuesday.
The two other EMTs in the ambulance, as well as four others in two cars and the tractor trailer, all had non-life-threatening injuries.
