Design Calls For Ellipse Facelift Near White House
WASHINGTON (AP) -- A new design proposed for the park to the south of the White House would raise the height of the Ellipse and add a seating wall as a barrier for cars.
The National Capital Planning Commission has announced New York-based Rogers Marvel Architects won a competition to improve President's Park South. Five teams competed to beautify security elements and make the park welcoming.
Commission Chairman L. Preston Bryant Jr. calls the design an "ingenious approach." It allows for easier pedestrian access to E Street, which has been closed to cars since Sept. 11.
Officials say the design would improve security, give pedestrians a better view of the White House and give the president a better view of the park.
The Secret Service and National Park Service must review the design.
