Delegates Announce Petition Drive On Redistricting

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Some Maryland lawmakers want to put the state's congressional redistricting map on the ballot in November to give voters a chance to reject it.

Delegate Neil Parrott, a Washington County Republican, kicked off a referendum petition drive on Tuesday in Annapolis.

Parrott organized MDPetitions.com, which played a prominent role in successfully petitioning a bill passed last year to the ballot in November. That bill would allow in-state tuition at state colleges and universities for some illegal immigrants.

Republicans have been especially critical of the redrawn 6th congressional district in western Maryland, which has been redrawn to include a significant portion of Montgomery County, which has more Democratic voters.

Organizers of the drive would have to submit petitions with at least 55,736 valid signatures to put the matter on the ballot.
