Death 19 Years After Shooting Ruled Homicide
BALTIMORE (AP) -- The death of a man who died in January, 19 years after he was shot in Baltimore carryout, has been ruled a homicide.
Maryland's medical examiner's office ruled Tuesday that James Fields Jr., 47, of Gwynn Oak died of pneumonia brought on by a prolonged stay in bed — a result of the 1992 shooting.
Police say Fields was talking with the owner of the carryout, when the owner's son opened fire, striking Fields repeatedly. The suspect arrested at the scene was found not criminally responsible of attempted first-degree murder and sent to a state psychiatric hospital. Police say he cannot be charged in the slaying now.
Fields' death brings the city's homicide count for 2011 to 26.
