Police: Woman Hit, Killed On I-83; Tractor Trailer Left Scene
BALTIMORE (WJZ) —A Pennsylvania woman is dead after a hit-and-run in Northern Baltimore County.
The incident took place Thursday around 9:30 p.m. on I-83 southbound in the area of Western Run Road.
Police say 53-year-old Nancy Carter pulled over to the side of the road due to possible mechanical issues. Moments after getting out of her Suzuki, she was hit by a tractor-trailer type vehicle and was dragged for about 500 feet.
"She was able to make it to the right shoulder, and as she was at the right shoulder, she had stepped out of her vehicle at some point in time and stood near her driver's side door," said Sgt. DeVaughn Parker of the Maryland State Police.
Carter was pronounced dead at the scene. Police sent a description for people to help locate the tractor-trailer. They say it should have damage to its front right bumper/headlight area.
AAA reports across the country, about 610 people are killed and thousands are injured every year while standing on the shoulder.
In 2015, Rick Warrick lost his life in a hit-and-run while changing a tire on the side of the BW parkway, and last year it happened again on I-695 near Catonsville.
Nearly 24 hours after the crash, officers were back on the scene with flashlights looking for more clues.
