D.C.'s U Street Area To Host National Symphony
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The National Symphony Orchestra will offer free community concerts in Washington's U Street, Shaw and Logan Circle neighborhoods for part of January, performing in area theaters, schools, churches and gathering spots.
The orchestra is announcing plans Tuesday for an opening event Jan 8. at the newly reopened Howard Theatre.
A family day event will be held Jan. 12 at the historic Lincoln Theatre where Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald once performed. It will include an "Instrument Petting Zoo" and a performance for children.
Howard University also is partnering with the orchestra to host a concert by the full symphony at the school's Cramton Auditorium on Jan. 14. Opera singer Jessye Norman, a Howard University graduate, will perform. The concert will include the Washington premiere of George Walker's Sinfonia No. 4.
