DC Police: Teacher Charged With Assault After Grabbing Boy

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A D.C. teacher is charged with assault and attempted second-degree child cruelty after police say he grabbed a third-grader so hard, he left a handprint.

Police announced Tuesday that 29-year-old Cameron Lewis of Hyattsville, Maryland, a Turner Elementary School teacher, was arrested last week.

An affidavit states the boy's mother says Lewis called her Nov. 30 to say that the boy was talking and not going to his next class as directed and Lewis may have squeezed the boy's arm too hard because it left a mark. Lewis told police he "became angry" and grabbed the 8-year-old. The officer wrote he saw a swollen handprint and the boy said he cried.

The affidavit states the principal removed Lewis from teaching. Neither Lewis nor his attorney could be reached for comment.
