Suspicious Object Near White House Deemed Harmless

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Authorities in Washington say a suspicious object found in a park near the White House turned out to be harmless.

U.S. Park Police Sgt. David Schlosser says he did not have a description of the object or why it was deemed suspicious. But he says the object has been determined not to pose a threat.

The object was found about midday Sunday in Lafayette Park near the White House.

The discovery comes amid heightened vigilance prompted by a package that ignited at a government mail facility in Washington on Friday and two packages that ignited Thursday in Maryland state government mailrooms.
