DC Officer From Md. Honored For Bravery At Navy Yard
BALTIMORE (AP) -- A District of Columbia police officer from Ellicott City is getting a congressional medal for killing the Washington Navy Yard shooter in 2013.
Rep. Elijah Cummings is leading a group of public officials Wednesday in Baltimore in awarding the Congressional Badge of Bravery to
Metropolitan Police Department Officer Dorian DeSantis.
The award is given to law enforcement officers for exceptional acts of bravery.
DeSantis brought down Aaron Alexis, who killed 12 people and wounded four others at the military installation on Sept. 16, 2013.
Cummings says DeSantis took a bullet in his vest and helped secure the safety of others before firing the fatal shot.
Alexis was a civilian contractor and former Navy reservist with mental health problems.
The building where the shooting occurred reopened in February.
