D.C. Mayor Says Cities Need Help On Job Training
BALTIMORE (AP) -- Washington Mayor Vincent Gray is calling for more help from the federal government for job training to help tackle the District of Columbia's high unemployment.
At the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Baltimore, Gray tells WTOP Radio the city got a boost from federal stimulus funding. He says places like D.C. need something more enduring to replace that to prepare people for new jobs that didn't exist five or 10 years ago.
Federal statistics show the district's unemployment rate is 9.8 percent. That's down just a tenth of a point from a year ago.
Gray says he is talking with other mayors about how to make Washington more attractive for businesses to help create more jobs. In the meantime, he says he will push for increased job training.
