D.C. Investigates Md. Boy Who Brought Drug To School
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The D.C. Council and school system are investigating why an elementary student who brought cocaine to school last week was attending classes in Washington because his family lives in Maryland.
The boy was reunited with his mother this week after being placed in foster care. When the parents appeared before a D.C. judge, they argued the city didn't have a right to take their children because they are Maryland residents in Prince George's County.
School officials say it's not uncommon for out-of-state students to attend D.C. schools because the city has all-day kindergarten and pre-K programs. But out-of-state students are supposed to pay tuition.
The school system only has one investigator to verify students' residency.
Four students were taken to a hospital after they either sniffed or swallowed the drug.
