D.C. Mayor Proposes Taxicab Reform
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Washington's mayor wants taxicabs in the nation's capital to accept credit cards, to be equipped with satellite navigation systems and to all be painted the same color.
Mayor Vincent Gray and D.C. Councilmember Mary Cheh announced a wide-ranging taxicab reform bill on Monday. It will be introduced Tuesday.
Among other changes, the bill would also mandate better training for cab drivers and allow the District of Columbia Taxicab Commission to set quotas for the number of drivers and cabs in the district.
The district's cab drivers are largely self-employed individual licensees, and many operate on a cash-only basis. Cabs come in a variety of colors. The bill would give the mayor the power to determine a uniform color scheme and approve an emblem symbolizing the District of Columbia flag.
