Customers Lining Up To Fill Up On Valentine's Day Delicacies
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- This week's storm brought much of the city to a halt. For retailers that usually thrive the day before Valentine's Day, the snow cost them thousands in sales.
Monique Griego has more on the rush to get caught up.
Most stores couldn't open Thursday, and even if they did, customers just weren't coming in. It was almost impossible for drivers to make their deliveries.
Snow may still be on the ground, but at Flowers By Gina D. on North Charles Street, love is finally in the air.
"We had to wait until this morning to get some of the flowers," said Gina Davis, Flowers By Gina D.
Thursday's snow quickly turned the shop's Valentine's Day rush into a cupid crisis for owner Gina Davis.
"First off, we were not able to do any orders, any deliveries yesterday," she said.
Now her staff is rushing to fix arrangements and fill a backlog of orders.
"Besides the 200 we would have to deliver today, we have like 80 from yesterday," Davis said.
The storm cost Davis around $4,000 in canceled orders. But for her, the focus is now on making sure all these flowers make it to their destination.
"It is what it is, we've got to just work it," said Davis.
At Wockenfuss Candies in Parkville, the day before Valentine's Day is actually the busiest. But because of the snow-covered streets, their strawberries didn't get dipped.
"Yesterday was just bad. We waited until the last moment. We were trying to open, but we just couldn't," said Carol Rosier, Wockenfuss.
With the doors now open, customers are lining up to fill up on all the Valentine's Day delicacies.
"So many men have come in today and they say, 'My wife says I have to come out and get those strawberries,'" Rosier said.
While nobody wants to lose an entire day of sales, the way these candies are being boxed up and shipped off, Wockenfuss is ready to handle what is now a holiday hustle.
"This year, it's just going to be like a double whammy," Rosier said.
Just in case you still need to grab a gift for someone, most Wockenfuss locations will be open until 9 p.m.
This year, Americans are expected to spend $13.4 billion on Valentine's Day gifts alone.
