CSX Donation Helps Connect Planned Sept. 11 Memorial Trail

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) -- Plans for the September 11th National Memorial Trail are moving forward, with CSX Transportation planning to donate 130 acres to help connect the trail to the Great Allegheny Passage.

According to the Cumberland Times-News, the 1,300-mile trail system is expected to connect the World Trade Center site, the Pentagon and the Flight 93 National Memorial.

CSX's donation, announced in September, consists of undeveloped land in southwestern Pennsylvania that will be used to build a 7-mile portion of trail between the Great Allegheny Passage Trail in Garrett and the Flight 93 National Memorial in Shanksville.

The Great Allegheny Passage is a 150-mile trail between Pittsburgh and Cumberland, Maryland. It connects in Cumberland to the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal towpath, enabling people to hike or bike from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C.
