'CSI: Baltimore School For The Arts,' Bio Science With A Twist
BALTIMORE (WJZ)—On Tuesday local students got a chance to test out their CSI skills at the Baltimore School for the Arts.
Monique Griego has more on the mobile van looking to lure students into the field of forensics.
It looks like a scene straight out of CSI. But these high-tech tests are being done by students in a very unique and mobile setting.
"It's almost like a field trip for us because we're inside the school all day, so it feels a lot better to go outside of school, step out of the classroom," said Ashleigh Plight, student.
Students at the Baltimore School for the Arts got a chance to test out the Maryland Bio Lab, a tractor trailer fully equipped to do bio science experiments.
"You get to do the things you don't get to do in the classroom, and it's fun," said Dana Orange, student.
The lab and its instructors travel to schools throughout Maryland. They offer a hands-on way to learn the latest in science.
"We do a lot of different forensic analysis," said Jennifer Colvin, Maryland Bio Lab employee. "We also do a lot of DNA or protein analysis. Everything that you need to do in 10th grade biology with a twist related to the companies that are in state of Maryland."
Organizers hope once the students get their hands on these experiments, they'll consider choosing science as a career path.
So far this lab on wheels seems to be working.
"I think biology is actually really interesting, and I really like this opportunity, and I think I really would go into a science field," said Amelia Voos, student.
The Maryland Bio Lab stays at each school for about a week. During that time it's able to meet each teacher's curriculum requirements.
