Crews Work To Fix 2 Water Main Breaks In Baltimore & Middle River
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Crews are working to fix two water main breaks in downtown Baltimore and Middle River.
The Department of Public Works is asking motorists to avoid the area around Guilford and Madison as they work on a 30-inch main that broke around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday. Traffic is being detoured in the area, and there is some localized water service loss.
Madison Street remains closed between Fallsway and Calvert Street. Guilford Avenue is closed from Chase Street to Centre Street. The Guilford off-ramp from the JFX is closed.
At this time, residences and one business in the 800-block of N. Calvert Street are without water. Another nearby apartment building is also without water service.
Customers who may have had temporary water service disruption may experience some cloudiness and should run their water for several minutes until it clears. If the water does not clear or you do not have water service, call 311.
Officials say this is the third time the main has broken since 2009. The pipe will now be replaced. Construction work on the new main is scheduled to begin in 2016.
Meanwhile, crews are also working on fixing a broken 12-inch main at Eastern Boulevard and Kingston Road in Middle River. The break is affecting about 200 customers, a shopping center and an elementary school. Hawthorne Elementary is closed Thursday due to the water main break.
