Controversial Development: Plans For Remington Wal-Mart Move Forward
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Plans for a new Wal-Mart store at 25th Street in Remington move another step closer to becoming reality.
Monique Griego has more on what has been a controversial development.
The battle over building a Wal-Mart in Baltimore's Remington neighborhood has been going on for years. But this week, proponents got another win, as plans for the store moved forward.
"I've heard it through the grapevine for a couple of years. It was on again, off again and then on again," said Steve Disanto Stefano, neighbor.
Stefano's house is right across the street from the warehouse-filled lot where the 25th Street station store is set to be built.
This week, Wal-Mart presented revised plans for the store to the city's urban design and architectural panel. Changes included more pedestrian access and a new building style to make it more urban.
The latest pictures give an idea of what the final project could look like.
"It's going to be a lot of unnecessary traffic," said Jonathan Lindsey, shop owner.
In a statement to WJZ, Wal-Mart said it was pleased the panel believed in these latest plans. It went on to say the store will provide 300 new jobs to the area.
Even neighbors who had concerns couldn't deny the convenience.
"This will be closer. Definitely closer," Stefano said.
"Wal-Mart would be a good store for this area because there is none. You've got to drive clear over to Hanover Street," said Lindsey.
The latest plans are just recommendations. Wal-Mart says it hasn't finalized anything just yet.
Wal-Mart says it took into consideration feedback from the community and panelists to come up with these latest development plans.
