Congressman Asks For Leads In Nephew's Murder
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- It's been one year since the nephew of Maryland Congressman Elijah Cummings was murdered. Police are still trying to solve the case and the congressman is begging for leads.
Adam May has the latest.
Police insist the case is not cold but they are not reporting any new leads.
Christopher Cummings was a promising honors student at Old Dominion University in Norfolk. His life was cut short last June.
"One year ago today we got the call no parents want to receive, the most dreaded call that Christopher had been shot down in cold blood," Congressman Elijah Cummings said.
Since the murder, Christopher's uncle, Congressman Elijah Cummings, has raised concerns over student safety. Christopher lived off campus in a neighborhood where other students have also been victimized by crime.
"Christopher is dead so I'm not here for him, I'm here for these other students," Cummings said.
Last September, police issued a warrant in the case for a person of interest but as of now, there's still no arrest. Police say they have assigned new detectives to the investigation and they're re-interviewing witnesses.
Ever since his nephew's funeral, Cummings has repeatedly issued a message to the killer.
"I promise you, we will find you. You will be found. You didn't give Christopher justice; you slaughtered him. We want to make sure you get justice. We want to make sure you never do this to another human being again," Cummings said.
Since the murder, police have increased patrols in that off-campus neighborhood.
Congressman Cummings says he thinks police are doing the best they can on this case. Everyone involved is confident there will eventually be an arrest.
