Composer On Peabody Faculty Wins Music Pulitzer
BALTIMORE (AP) -- A composer on the faculty of the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University has won the Pulitzer Prize for music.
Kevin Puts, who has been on the Baltimore conservatory's composition faculty since 2006, won the award Monday for "Silent Night: Opera in Two Acts." Puts is from St. Louis, and received degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Yale University.
The opera, Puts' first, was commissioned by the Minnesota Opera in Minneapolis and premiered in November. It tells the true story of a spontaneous cease-fire among Scottish, French and Germans during World War I.
Before the opera he had created a sizable body of works for orchestras, including four symphonies and several concertos, which have been performed around the world.
