Newlywed From Baltimore County Dies In Catamaran Accident Off Ocean City
OCEAN CITY, Md. (WJZ) -- Panic off the coast of Ocean City when a catamaran capsizes with four men on board. Boaters manage to pull two survivors from the water, but the other two could not be saved.
One of the dead is a newlywed from Baltimore County.
Meghan McCorkell talks with his family.
Bill Gogel had just gotten married in March. On Monday, he decided to go on a rare fishing trip, but he never came home.
Witnesses say a wave caused the 28-foot catamaran to capsize 32 miles off the coast of Ocean City. One survivor was found clinging to the boat. Another was floating in the water.
Fredy Fabricio-Castro, 57, of Silver Spring and Bill Gogel Jr., 57, of Baltimore never resurfaced.
"He was my soulmate. My best friend, I'm going to miss him," Debbie Gogel said.
Gogel's wife Debbie says her husband rarely went fishing. A former Marine, he was the proud father of two daughters and three stepchildren.
Amanda Foti says there are so many things she will miss about her dad.
"His hugs. That's the number one thing. And his voice, reassuring me, telling me it's all going to be OK," said Foti.
The Coast Guard is now investigating the accident. Two nearby boats managed to rescue the two survivors and call for help.
Debbie Gogel says she keeps reliving the last moment she had with her husband.
"Like I said, his last words to me was, 'I love you with all of my heart.' And then he kissed me and went off on the boat," she said.
Last words she will cherish forever.
Funeral services for Gogel will be held Friday night.
The two boats that helped rescue the survivors were participating in the White Marlin fishing tournament. The accident happened on the tournament's first day.
