Clifton Brown of Comcast Sportsnet Joins Scott And Jeremy To Discuss The Ravens
Clifton Brown of Comcast Sportsnet joins Scott and Jeremy to discuss the ups and downs from the Ravens' latest preseason game as well as who will be ready to start week one.
The Ravens' newly acquired Steve Smith Sr. showed Baltimore why they signed him with his play against the Redskins on Saturday night.
"He was very impressive against the Redskins. He's just an intense guy. He brings that to practice every day," said Brown. "I don't think there's any doubt that if he stays healthy this season he'll make some plays and make the Ravens better."
One of the concerns with Smith going over the middle so much for catches is the increased possibility of an injury. Though a tough player, seeing what happened to Welker over the weekend certainly scared some people.
"It's definitely dangerous in there, but I don't think that's something they'll take out of the offense. He's just going to be too important as a third down chains-mover to protect him in that way," said Brown.
As for the other recievers on the Ravens' roster, there will be a final competition against New Orleans to see who makes the team and who does not.
"I would lean towards Campanero and Thompson being five and six on the depth chart. I think Campanero with his quickness has a dimension the Ravens need. They traded up to get the guy, so to let him go and have him be good somewhere else would be devastating," said Brown.
Corner is a question of depth only because of injury. Although it looks like all three starters will suit up week one, it will be interesting to see how much action they end up getting.
"They're obviously hoping but all three of those guys will be out there week one. I think Jimmy Smith will definitely be out there, Asa has a chance to be, and I also think Webb will be out there, but they have to be extra cautious with him," said Brown.
"I think it's good that other young guys stepped up against Washington. And even though it's a different position than corner, Terrence Brooks has been playing much better of late in the secondary," Brown added.
What's more, the Ravens' front seven looks to be strong early on, as rookies are stepping up and making plays.
"I think Dummervil looks really good, and in his second year with the Ravens, I think he's going to have a great year," Brown said.
"I think Jernigan looks really good and Brandon Williams is playing very well. C.J. Mosely also looks great. If they get three young players playing well and being contributors, the defense could be very good," said Brown.
